K-Pop category added
Acoustic singer Yeng Constantino bagged the most number of nominations to this year’s MYX Music Awards, breaking the perennial dominance of rock bands in the annual event.
The 22-year-old reality talent search champion received five nominations: Favorite Music Video, Favorite Song (for her single "Jeepney Love Story"), Favorite Artist, Favorite Female Artist, and Favorite MYX Celebrity Video Jock (VJ).
Ms. Constantino’s single "Kung Wala Na Nga" which she recorded with the band 6cyclemind and Callalily frontman Kean Cipriano earned for her another three nominations: Favorite Video, Favorite Song, and Favorite Collaboration.
Nominated together with Ms. Constantino for the Favorite Music Video Award are rock bands Tanya Markova ("Disney"), Sandwich ("Lakad"), and Callalily ("Liwanag"). The other nominees for the Favorite Song award are bands as well -- Tanya Markova ("Disney"), Slapshock ("Cariño Brutal") and Parokya ni Edgar ("Pakiusap Lang").
Aside from Ms. Constantino, the nominees for Favorite Artist are: Callalily; Sandwich, Parokya ni Edgar, and balladeer Christian Bautista.
Joining Ms. Constantino in the race for the Favorite Female Artist award are Juris, KC Concepcion, Kyla, and last year’s winner Sarah Geronimo, while the award for Favorite Male Artist will be between Mr. Bautista, Billy Crawford, Gloc-9, Piolo Pascual, and Rico Blanco.
Nominees for Favorite Group are: 6cyclemind, Callalily, Parokya ni Edgar, Sandwich, and Slapshock, while those for Favorite MYX Celebrity VJ are: Ms. Constantino, Aljur Abrenica, Empress, Parokya ni Edgar, and Sam Milby.
Now on its sixth year, the MYX Music Awards is an annual event conducted by local music channel MYX. The winners of the awards are determined through text votes sent from Feb. 7 to March 7. The winners will be announced during the awards night on March 15 at the Music Museum in Greenhills, San Juan.
MYX Music Channel head Andre Alvarez said this year’s MYX Music Awards has a new category on Korean-Pop music -- Favorite K-Pop Video. The nominees to this category are: Beast ("Beautiful"); U-KISS ("Bingeul, Bingeul"); Super Junior ("Bonamana"); 2ne1 ("Go Away"); and Girls’ Generation ("Run Devil Run").
"We decided to add this new category this year in recognition of the growing popularity of K-Pop in the country," Mr. Alvarez told reporters last week. "We cannot deny the popularity of K-Pop. I think we just have to give them that kind of recognition."
